In a turn of events numerous Nuer refugees from South Sudan have made the decision to leave the Pinyudo camp in Ethiopia. These individuals have been residing in the camp since 2013. Due to shortages of food, water and safety concerns they feel compelled to risk their lives by returning to their war torn homeland. The camp has unfortunately been plagued by incidents of theft, violence and harassment inflicted upon the refugees by members of the host community.
On September 14th 2023 the refugees released a statement expressing their prolonged suffering within the camp. They specifically highlighted concerns regarding mismanagement and corruption within the Ethiopian Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) which oversees operations at the camp. The refugees also shed light on how humanitarian aid provided by organizations such as the United Nations and other donors has been mishandled. Moreover they mentioned that since June 2023 food deliveries from the UN have ceased due to unrest in Ethiopias Gambella region where Pinyudo camp is situated.
Despite appealing for assistance with transportation to South Sudan, from both their government and global community members of Sudanese descent no response has been received thus far.
They mentioned that they have no option but to depart from the camp on foot just like they did in 1984 and 2013 when they escaped violence and famine in their homeland. They expressed concerns, about attacks from the community, who are already aware of their plan to leave.
The situation of the Nuer refugees in Pinyudo camp serves as an example of the crisis prevailing in Africa, where millions of individuals are displaced due, to conflicts, poverty and climate change. It is crucial for the international community and media to give attention to their circumstances and promptly provide them with necessary aid and protection.
